158 P reviously envisaged as a service for musicians, ArtistShare was the first website to offer crowdfunding as a service enabling many bands and musicians to obtain indepen- dent financing. Today there are more than 500 crowdfunding platforms for many different sectors, some of which have specialised in certain areas. People register for free on these platforms, outline their projects and lay out their financial aims. In addition an appropriate time frame must be entered in which the required sum is to be reached. Then anyone who visits the site can support a project by pledging a selected amount to the developer. The backers often receive small rewards in the form of access to internal information, priority access to finished projects or may take part in testing the product. The way pledges are paid out depend on the service provider. Some give the pledges re- ceived directly to the developers straight away, whilst others first transfer the funds when the full amount has been reached. If the required sum is not reached those service pro- viders who do not send the money to thedeveloperstraight- away then transfer the money back to the backers, but with service providers who hand the money straight over to the developers, then the pledges are lost. Within the games industry, the indie games branch is a steadily growing share, mostly privately funded and with crowdfunding as independent means of finan- cing making up a considerable part of it.
