208 CologneCampusNews +++ SAE Institute Cologne at gamescom 2012 +++ SAE & SAE ALUMNI NEWS // EUROPEAN NEWS n At the beginning of December, the first study week for our games courses which commenced in September took place. The students were divided into groups in advance to work on new inter- pretations of four major classic games. Pac-Man, River Raid, Break Out and Asteroids were used as a model for fun, modern gaming action. The students spent the first day mainly planning their projects and dividing up the activities, which included discussing various features of the game play and agreeing on graphic designs. In his 3D remake, for example, Pac-Man’s task is to eat his way through a labyrinth inside a ball. River Raid became ʻPaper Raidʼ, with the classic aircraft changed into a paper aeroplane flying through an office. Some groups were able to start work on modelling their 3D assets as soon as the first day. Soon the first results were ready which were discussed again in a meeting and used as a basis for setting the next set of goals. Modelling, UV unwrappin assets was dealt with by programmers worked on r with lines of code. Game Study Week at SAE Institut
