040 SAE & SAE Alumni NEWS // European News Live mixing workshop n Before his diploma celebration, Günter Eisbach, recent alumnus of the AEDF 310 course, held a hands-on workshop here at SAE Frankfurt on the subject of live mixing. He visited with his own equipment and led the seminar with a digital mixing desk and a complete PA system, focussing on both conventional and in-ear monitoring. This included a run-through of an entire day of production – from unload- ing to setting up and calibration, a virtual sound check, monitor set-up (conventional vs. IEM), live sound check, avoiding feedback, live record- ing, disassembly and packing away. Students used a track from their recently completed course recording, as though it were a live band, for the virtual sound check. In addition extra tracks were added and inte- grated into the monitor and the main mix. The seminar was a success thanks to the involvement of all participants in the action and the practical work on the newest digital live equipment n Live-Mixing-Workshop Noch vor seiner Diplomfeier hielt Günter Eisbach, frischer Absolvent des Kurses AEDF 310, bei uns einen Hands-On Workshop zum Thema Live Mixing. Dazu kam er kurzerhand mit seiner eigenen Anlage vorbei und führte das Seminar mit digitalem Mischpult und kompletter PA durch, wobei er sowohl auf konventionelles als auch auf In-Ear-Monitoring ein- ging. Ein kompletter Produktionstag wurde in der Praxis durchlaufen – vom Ausladen über Setup und Einmessen, Virtual Soundcheck, Monitor Setup (konventionell vs. IEM), Live-Soundcheck, Feedback-Vermeidung, Live- Recording, bis zum Abbau/Verladen. Für den virtuellen Soundcheck nutz- ten die Studenten die Einzelspuren ihres kürzlich absolvierten Kurs-Re- cordings, als wäre es eine Liveband. Des Weiteren wurden zusätzliche Spuren eingespielt, die in den Monitor-, wie den Mainmix integriert wurden. Das Seminar überzeugte durch die Einbindung aller Teilnehmer ins Ge- schehen und die praktische Arbeit an neuestem digitalen Live-Equipment. Wireless microphone workshop n Our students had the opportunity to become familiar with a revolu- tionary digital wireless microphone system by Sony, which works with AES/EBU signals. Markus Warlich, Professional Audio Specialist at Sony, described the transition of AES/EBU signals into the wireless sector as a milestone and the future of radio transmission. He explained the functions of the sender and the receiver and the differences in transmission principles for the music and film sectors. Of course, the question of what differentiates good and bad microphones and receiv- ers in the digital wireless sector was also discussed. The current con- troversial radio frequency problem was also comprehensively ex- plained and the present consequences for audio engineers and filmmakers were debated. The systems gave the students the chance to experience the practical application of the technology and to gain an impression of the trendsetting concept of digital radio transmission. n Workshop Funkmikrofone Unsere Studenten hatten die Gelegenheit, ein revolutionäres digitales Funkmikrofonsystem von Sony kennenzulernen, das mit AES/EBU- Signalen arbeitet. Markus Warlich, Professional Audio Specialist bei Sony, bezeichnete die Übertragung von AES/EBU-Signalen im Wire­ less-Bereich als Meilenstein und die Zukunft der Funkübertragung. Er erklärte die Funktionsweise von Sender und Empfänger und den Un- terschied in Übertragungsprinzipien für den Musik- und für den Film- bereich. Natürlich ging es auch um die Frage, was überhaupt gute und schlechte Mikrofone und Empfänger im Bereich digital wireless aus- zeichnet. Darüber hinaus wurde das aktuell brisante Funkfrequenzen- problem eingehend erklärt, sowie über die momentanenAuswirkungen für Audio Engineers und Filmemacher gesprochen. Durch die mitge- brachten Systeme hatten die Studenten die Möglichkeit, die Technik im praktischen Einsatz zu erleben und einen Eindruck von dem zu- kunftsweisenden Konzept der digitalen Funkübertragung zu gewinnen. New premises for Interactive Entertainment n When we presented our fifth department – Interactive Entertainment – at the Cologne campus to gaming industry representatives at the beginning of the year, interest was high. There is a great demand in Cologne and sur- rounding areas for well educated profession- als. The first course has been running since March of this year in the specially constructed prem- ises. There is a sizeable practice area with workstations specifically designed for the course, two seminar rooms, a recreation room and offices in just under 500m2 . The close proximity to the main buildings promises much exciting cooperation between the various departments in the future. We look forward to it! n Neue Räumlichkeiten für Interactive Entertainment Als wir Anfang diesen Jahres Vertreter der Gamesbranche einluden, um ihnen mit Inter- active Entertainment den fünften Fachbereich am Kölner Standort vorzustellen, war das In- teresse groß: auch in Köln und dem angren- zenden Umland besteht ein großer Bedarf an gut ausgebildeten Fachkräften. Seit März diesen Jahres läuft der erste Kurs in den eigens dafür ausgebauten Räumlich- keiten.Auf knapp 500 qm sind ein großzügiger Übungsbereich mit speziell für den neuen Kurs eingerichteten Workstations, zwei Seminarräume, ein Aufenthaltsraum und Büroräume entstanden. Die räumliche Nähe zum Hauptgebäude verspricht für die Zukunft viele spannende Kooperationen zwischen den verschiedenen Fachbereichen. Wir freuen uns darauf!
