SAE Magazin 2/2011

SAE Alumnus Hannes Koch is currently sailing around the world producing a concept album with his captain, Ben. ➤ After finishing our course at SAE we were yearning for a new adventure. As of April 2011 we started sailing from Australia to Germany working on a concept album that brings together over a hundred musicians from 35 countries. A breath- taking project that will lead us along a two year journey. During the next 18 months, we will be spending our days aboard the “Marianne” a small but definitely cosy sailing boat that will take us from Australia to Berlin. After graduating from SAE, Ben Schaschek and I wanted to experience a musi- cal journey, traveling over the four continents, giving a whole other meaning to the “world music” genre. We wanted to make an album melting artists from all over the world together. We can therefore be described as “sailing conductors”. We are fully kitted out on board – cameras, microphone, com- puter and baskets full of rice and beans. We spend our days fishing, while at night we enjoy being surrounded by the infi- nite darkness. Luckily we have our iPods to remind us of what’s beyond those endless waves 100 miles away, the coast- land. When we get to a harbour, we try to meet up with the local musicians and record whoever we can get behind the micro- phone. As a reward, after the recording we have a pizza, which is more than welcome after having fish for a few days. In May 2008, two ordinary landlubbers attended the same full time course, AEDF508 Audio Engineering in Berlin. Beardless and without a clue we didn’t learn anything about sailing or knots, but instead we fueled up on sound and record- ing techniques, which we now use on a daily basis. We regu- larly spent over 60 hours a week on the campus, slept on the tram and if the Head Audio Instructor would have allowed it, we would have preferred to work in the studio all night. One year later, after long hours hard and relentless work, we finally had our diplomas in our hands, but unfortunately it had cost me my girlfriend. Thinking about it now, this wasn’t really a bad thing as we don’t have any room for women on board. ➤ “Our mission should lead us over the ocean and show us what the global language of music is capable of.” Marianne – our home for the next one and a half years “We Are Sailing” – Two men in a boat capture sound waves . A tale of two friends, lots of water and a great deal of music.
