SAE Magazin 2/2011

Steve Hartley, has over 30 years experience in the news industry and covers corporate and media relations for SAE Institute in the UK, he is based at the world headquarters in Oxford. ➤ Take a gentle walk along the Regents Canal towpath from Hackney towards the city – pass by the East End canal boat dwellers’ idyllic answer to Little Venice and you arrive at Bankstock Studios, home to SAE Institute London’s new high profile £4m studio expansion of the Kingsland Road Campus. This cleverly chosen location, neighbouring Shoreditch, is rich in creative culture including the White Cube and Spitz galler- ies and numerous live music venues, bars and clubs, just a stone’s throw from London’s multicultural Brick Lane, famous for its Indian restaurants and buzzing night life. A creative hub that has produced artists including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. It’s also been home to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and music legend Jarvis Cocker. This prime educational studio facility covering 8,500 sq feet situated in the heart of London’s vibrant and fashionable East End is a welcome expansion for students wanting to study creative media in the capital. The new 24/7 studio facility has been designed and built to the highest acoustic standard, on two floors with 14 interconnected studios (5 live rooms and 9 control rooms), making SAE Insti- tute London the largest audio engineering school in the UK. Students whose ambition is to gain a diploma or Audio Produc- tion Degree BA/BSc (Hons) can study using world class facili- ties installed by Munro Acoustics, whose unrivalled experi- ence in studio design has achieved acoustical excellence at the college. Amongst others, Munro’s client list includes U2, BBC World Service, Royal National Theatre, Pinewood Shepperton, De Lane Lea and Goldcrest Post. Luca Barassi, SAE Institute London College Manager and Project Manager for the new studios said, “It was crucial for us to provide students with a professional studio environment and at the same time give them enough flexibility to explore differ- ent production techniques. Each room has been purpose built in order to cover a wide range of typical studio designs and specifications. We have used the latest construction techniques including a modernised version of floating floors and suspend- ed ceilings to achieve maximum isolation. The windows be- tween studios are installed with internal triple glazing to pre- vent sound leakage between live and control rooms”. “The first thing we did was to build a test studio for noise as- sessment; it was a room within a room – you could say it was a £25,000 sound check. It passed with flying colours and is now the drum recording booth.” Isolation and aesthetics are extremely important elements in studio construction but Luca Barassi has also paid a lot of at- tention to the finer details such as permanent ceiling-mounted talk-back microphones and comprehensive interconnectivity that allows a virtually immediate re-routing of the signals between rooms. A maintenance area staffed by in-house and freelance techni- cians and equipped with servicing and soldering benches to test and replace components is available on site allowing to keep downtime to the minimum. ➤ Students enjoy the new professional studio environment at SAE London “This is a great environment to train the next generation of creative media professionals.” sae & Sae Alumni news // portrait London 013
