And one such outing saw a large number of SAE students given the chance to get some first hand experience of celebrated Madrid landmark Teatro Real. Declared a National Monument in 1977 and situated onthePlazadeOriente,theTeatroRealisconsidered one of the best opera houses in Europe, thanks to its modern facilities and unrivalled acoustics. By order of Fernando VII, building of the opera house on top of an old theatre began in 1817. The building, with its irregular shape, went through a wonderful period until the beginning of the 20th Century when, due to its poor condition, its doors were closed. After restoration work it reopened in 1966 as a concert hall until it was again restored and reopened in 1997. It has a capacity of 1745 seats and, aside from its stage and lobby, it boasts a huge central chandelier that hangs above the stalls. During their visit the students had the chance to see one of the most amazing places in the theatre, the stage area. This area, which can host three sets simultaneously, is a place filled with cables, ropes, machines and bars controlling the lights, backdrops and sets with complete precision.
