kicks off +++ SAE Institute Dubai‘s Bingu Ratnapala talks about new Digital Painting Course +++ SAE Institute Duba INDEX Thedigitalartworldhastrulycomeintoitsown. When did you know this was going to be your medium? Well, ever since I was a kid I knew I wanted to be an artist of some sort. My dad, who used to be a comic book artist at the time, heavily influenced me. Even- tually he left that line of work and became a full-time illustrator for an advertising agency and during that time he bought a Mac Performa and started making the transition to digital illustration in Photoshop. He was painting with a mouse, which by today’s stand- ards is quite ridiculous. So initially I was turned off by the whole digital side of art. I preferred traditional mediums like pencil, ink and paint. I wanted to stay away from painting with a mouse, so, I basically stud- ied fine arts and traditional animation in college and went through painting in oils to water colour until they eventually introduced a digital background painting module as part of our course. Most TV studios push- ing out animated cartoons in Canada were switch- ing from traditionally painted gauche backgrounds to digital paintings. I tried the course and used a WACOM tablet for the first time. I was hooked! It was incredibly forgiving, you could fix mistakes on the fly and you didn’t have to wait for paint to dry; not to mention, I didn’t have to spend a dime on art supplies anymore. ute Dubaiʼs Bingu Ratnapala talks Digital Painting Course rer Bingu Ratnapala talks ting short course and what been interpreted in count- imaginable medium.
