144 In the words of pioneer and author Eric Ries, what all of these new events share is a com- mon idea: “The business and marketing functions of a startup should be considered as important as engineering and product develop- ment and therefore deserve an equally rigorous methodology to guide them (Ries 2011).” But where does the Lean startup movement come from? The methodology of Lean thinking is not new. In fact, car manufacturers were the first ones to introduce the Lean concept to their production processes starting with Henry Ford and pioneer Kiichiro Toyoda who is one of the inventors of the Toyota Production System (TPS).
