“The allocated rooms for the Red Bull studio were initially built as rehearsal rooms” Dennis Beentjes added. “Concrete walls and floors (floating), heigh ceilings and limited acous- tic treatment, which are perfect for rehearsal rooms, but not suitable for a professional recording environment. The studio designers from Red Bull did a great job and provided all the drawings and details. For the actual building and installation we introduced them to the same studio-builders that construct- ed our studios at the SAE Institute facilities in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. They did all the acoustical treatment and installed the massive window between the two rooms. It’s very exciting to see how much the SAE network is involved in this project”. The studio is built to accommodate Red Bull’s international artist programme, as well as local talent and consumers. The studio can be seen as a blank canvas for musical creativity that is there to host projects in any genre, from underground to mainstream for a range of local and international musical talent. The gear and recording equipment has to reflect this. The centre of the studio is a fully refurbished Tascam M5000. This analog console was found in an old rock studio in the middle of Holland. Although it was in good condition it had to be cleaned and certain elements had to be replaced. This was done by SAE staff members at the Amsterdam facilities giving them time to familiarise themselves with the mixer and to train students to work independently on this console. Through the help and support of various suppliers within the SAE and Blueprint Media network a variety of high-end equip- ment was purchased and collected for the Red Bull project. Besides the analog console the studio includes high-end micro- phone pre-amps, effect units, dynamic processors, an impres- sive collection of new and vintage synthesizers, fast Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) and a full blown radio studio used for live broadcasting. (See the technical info box for more de- tails). Die Mitarbeit des SAE Institute besteht aus technischer Beratung, der Bereitstellung eines engagierten Teams von This studio project is scheduled for a period of 3 years. SAE Institute’s involvement consists of technical advice and con- sultancy, providing a dedicated team of trained audio engineers (SAE students and graduates), conduct workshops on location and nominating new projects. The outcome is audio visual content, which is spread through social media and other media partnerships with the likes of MTV, national radio and high profile online platforms. SAE’s audio lecturers Frank de Jong and Bruce Gibb trained a selected group of students to work as audio engineers. This team did the full equipment installation in the Red Bull Studio, putting many hours of connecting, soldering, adjusting, testing and fine-tuning into this project. The audio students are work- ing in the studio as recording and mix engineers for a period of 6 months, after which a new team will be assigned and trained. Dennis concluded, “SAE Institute Amsterdam is very pleased with this unique cooperation. Our students gain valuable work experience and get the chance to work with international and local musical talent. It’s also great to see how we’ve combined forces with this project. We provide a constructive and valu- able input, which gives us worthy exposure and new network- ing capabilities in return. Due to the strong commitment and enthusiasm of our students and staff I’m convinced this will become a very successful project”. n ausgebildeten Audio Engineers (SAE-Studenten und -Absol- venten), der Durchführung von Workshops vor Ort und dem Vorschlagen neuer Projekte. The centre of the studio is a fully refurbished Tascam M5000.
