We had to build market presence from scratch. I equate it to something like taking Coca Cola to Mars. Please describe your role at SAE Institute. I am the overarching captain of the ship who has the respon- sibility for every aspect of the financial, administrative and academic systems and the staff who handle these systems in partnership with me. My self-imposed mandate is to ensure that everything we do works towards building the profile of SAE Institute in Africa by forging a reputation as a credible and aspirational option for those wishing to study in Creative Media Technologies. David Maclean is the Director of SAE Institute South Africa based in Cape Town. He is responsible for the commercial and academic operations of SAE in South Africa and is at the forefront of introducing the SAE brand to the African continent. Trenton Birch interviewed him in Cape Town. Trenton Birch interviewte ihn in Cape Town. Despite the large presence of SAE internationally, the brand was unknown here so we had to build market presence from scratch. I equate it to something like taking Coca Cola to Mars. There is also a degree of caution and some cynicism in SA towards international organisations opening campuses here so we had to be respectful and be cautious of that. I also think the meticulousness and fastidiousness of the systems of edu- cation, especially higher education providers, were underestimated. The SA Department of Education and Council on Higher Education are very astute bodies and benchmark themselves against the best higher education councils across the world. Africa has a label of being a “de- veloping continent” and because of its socio-political reputations is not recognised in many areas as a bench- mark. As a result there was an underestimation of the academic requirements, specifically around the context of accreditation, and this was a challenge. Tell us about the growth of the media / entertainment industry in South Africa and across the continent. I believe Africa has the fastest growing media industry in the world and South Africa is at the forefront of this and seen as the jewel in Africa’s crown. Although we have a very notori- ous socio-political history, we also have a reputation as an in- credibly innovative, entrepreneurial and hard working country and because we are still “developing”, we are not shackled by the same systems, policies and procedures of the developed world and therefore have far more creative latitude. We’re also becoming increasingly patriotic to our own creations, which is helping drive the growth and quality of production. Many African countries have the desire to compete globally and this coupled with incredible stories and unique content, not seen by the rest of the world, puts us in a strong position to compete successfully in the near future. We’ve seen amazing growth in filmmaking, exporting films like District 9, which was shown in mainstream theatres around the globe and we recently had the first international release for a South African full length, animated feature film Jock of The Bushveld – which featured the voice of Brian Adams as the main character. Music from the continent is also gaining good traction internationally with bands touring globally on a regular basis. What are some of the advantages of studying in Cape Town? Our students study in a spectacular, safe and highly respected city for less than half the price of most of our other campuses across the globe for exactly the same training and quality of fa- cilities. Cape Town recently won the bid to become the “World Design Capital” for 2014 and Table Mountain is now one of the worlds “7 Wonders of Nature”. It is an incredibly creative, beautiful and inspiring city. Our campus has some of the best facilities on the continent and our employment strategy is ➤ Mit welchen Herausforderungen war die Eröffnung des ersten SAE Institute in Afrika verbunden? Unsere Camous-Ausstattung gehört zu den besten des Kontinents und unsere Einstellungspolitik ist ➤ David with influential members of South Africa’s film industry TRENTON BIRCH is an artist / DJ, record label owner and music / brand specialist from South Africa.
