Davie’s passion is evident when he speaks about the world of audio. Davies Leidenschaft wird offensichtlich, wenn er über die Audio-Welt spricht. It’s the kind of hearty laugh that nearly sounds rehearsed: a comfort- ing chuckle that doesn’t linger uncomfortably in the air for too long. He unleashes the laugh frequently and organically: it’s never delivered nervously to fill empty pockets of silence, it’s never forced out by a sense of polite obligation and it’s never obnoxiously loud or frustratingly soft. “You can probably tell that I’m no good at stuff like this,” laments Chris Davie, halfway through our interview, “If we were just sitting at a table hanging out, I could probably go on for hours.” He laughs. „Du merkst sicher, dass ich in solchen Sachen nicht gut bin“, klagt Chris Davie während unseres Telefon-Interviews. „Würden wir einfach so zusammen an einem Tisch sitzen, könnte ich wahrscheinlich noch Stunden weitermachen.“ Er lacht. It’s … it’s … it’s half-maddening. Cynical reporters hear a quote like the above with a natural laugh and our kneejerk reaction is to immediately assume that it’s a calculated response: a whirling PR curveball whooshing past the hapless interviewer. This is a presumption that seems legitimised pre- cisely by the fact that Davie is good at stuff like this. He’s a natural conversationalist with a quick mind. He gives lik- able answers in a rich, friendly baritone. He has a diverse and respectful sense of humor that is actually funny. The upbeat rhythm of his voice is unrelenting, and his answers are un- guarded, straightforward and not boring. But here’s the thing about people like Chris Davie. The trained cynical reporter, salivating for one dishon- est quote or intonation that proves Davie’s merely trying to spin game, eventually and exhaustingly comes up empty-handed. To follow the baseball metaphor: the interviewer has been squinting and swinging foolishly at an imaginary pitcher. Meanwhile, Davie’s not even playing the game. He’s probably not even in the ballpark, but if he is, he’s probably in the stands buying a veggie dog … for his kids. Davie is the exceedingly rare type of tremendously personable and indisputably likeable everyman. He cusses on occasion, but never crudely or in poor taste. He takes the time to compli- ment you if you’ve asked a good question. He’s successfully sported a ponytail, and he can cheerfully laugh about it now with no trace of hurt pride. He is courteous without being self- righteous. All of these qualities make him not only an upstanding per- son, but also an excellent Vice President of Operations for SAE Institute U.S. He is in constant contact with people: SAE students, faculty, staff, alumni and hundreds more outside of the SAE family, a task which is ably matched by his amiable personality. His ability to be flexible and handle a multitude of situations also proves valuable. “There really isn’t a set daily schedule, it’s a pretty dynamic thing,” says Davie of his job, “I’m responsible for the day-to- day operations of all of our U.S. schools, [so] there’s always something new going on.” Consequently, Davie’s presence has become ubiquitous around the U.S. SAE Institute campuses, of which there are six. His association with SAE Institute stems back to 2001, when he became an instructor at the Nashville campus after years of experience as an audio engineer working on projects for Nash- ville labels like MCA and Warner Brothers records. “I was pretty excited over having the ability to affect our in- dustry [differently] and to preserve the art of audio engineer- ing and fostering creativity,” says Davie, who comes from a lineage of educators: his father was a college dean while his mother taught kindergarten. ➤ Es ... es ... es macht fast verrückt. Er hat ei- nen vielfältigen und respektvollen Sinn für Humor, der wirklich witzig ist. Der optimistische Rhythmus seiner Stimme ist uner- bittlich. Und seineAntworten unbedacht, direkt und kurzweilig. Aber mit Leuten wie Chris Davie ist es nun einmal folgendermaßen. Der geübte zynische Reporter, der gerade- zu auf ein unehrliches Zitat oder ei- nen Tonfall wartet, der beweist, dass Davie versucht ein Spiel zu spielen, geht letztendlich erschöpft mit leeren Händen aus. Um bei der Baseball- Metapher zu bleiben: der Interviewer hatte dumm in Richtung eines ima- ginären Werfers geschielt. Während Davie nicht einmal das Spiel spielt. Er ist wahrscheinlich nicht einmal im Baseballstadion. Aber falls doch, kauft er wahrscheinlich gerade an einer Bude einen Veggie Dog ... für seine Kinder. Davie ist der äußerst seltene Typ eines sagenhaft sympathi- schen und unstrittig liebenswerten Jedermanns. Gelegentlich flucht er, jedoch niemals derb oder geschmacklos. Er nimmt sich Zeit dir ein Kompliment zu machen, wenn du eine gute Frage gestellt hast. Er trug mit Erfolg Pferdeschwanz und kann ohne jede Spur von verletztem Stolz herzhaft darüber lachen. Er ist zuvorkommend ohne selbstgerecht zu sein. All diese Qualitäten machen ihn nicht nur zu einer aufrechten Person, sondern auch zu einem exzellenten Vice President of Operations für das SAE Institute U.S. Er ist ständig mit Leu- ten in Kontakt: SAE-Studenten, dem Lehrkörper, Mitarbeitern, Alumnis und Hunderten mehr außerhalb der SAE-Familie. Eine Aufgabe, die gut zu seiner liebenswerten Persönlichkeit passt. Seine Fähigkeit flexibel zu sein und eine Vielzahl an Situatio- nen zu handlen erweist sich als ebenso wertvoll. „Es gibt wirklich keinen festen Tagesplan, es ist eine ziemlich dynamische Sache”, sagt Davie über seinen Job. „Ich bin ver- antwortlich für das Alltagsgeschäft all unserer U.S.-Schulen, da ist (also) immer was Neues los.” Folglich ist Davie auf den sechs U.S.-Campussen von SAE Institute allgegenwärtig. Sei- ne Verbindung mit SAE Institute reicht bis 2001 zurück, als er nach jahrelanger Erfahrung als Tontechniker verschiedener Projekte für MCA, Warner Brothers und anderer Labels aus Nashville am Campus in Nashville Dozent wurde. „Ich habe mich sehr darüber gefreut, unsere Industrie (auf an- dere Art) beeinflussen zu können, die Kunst der Tontechnik be- wahren und die Kreativität pflegen zu können”, so Davie, der aus einer Pädagogenfamilie stammt: sein Vater war College- Dekan, während seine Mutter im Kindergarten unterrichtete. ➤ Chris Davie: By the Numbers 50+: Number of major label albums Davie engineered on prior to joining SAE Institute. 12,000: Number of people Davie did a live mix for in Fukuoaka Japan. 6: Age of Davie when he started lessons for the Tabla drum. 11: Age when Davie recorded his first multi-track effort, using his father’s cassette decks and a bi-amp mixer. 52: Most sleepless hours logged by Davie in one consecutive engineering session. 3: Miles that Davie runs each day. 10 Million: the amount of total sales for the albums featuring Davie’s work Chris Davie JESSE HAGEN is the Online Marketing Co- ordinator for the U.S. SAE Institute Group.
