SASKIA RINNE, Operations Manager SAE Alumni GmbH “I love to change things in a way which wouldn’t be possible live.” Calvin Hollywood – when I first heard the name I smiled. What sort of a name is that? Is he somebody? What does he do? After a little bit of Internet research it was clear that Calvin Hollywood is not a name to be laughed at, quite the opposite - the nice guy from near Heidelberg has good skills. He has been known in the photography and Photoshop sectors for over four years. We have invited Calvin to attend the SAE Alumni Convention VII and also asked him a few questions. You have become one of the most sought after Photoshop trainers in Germany and the surrounding coun- tries in a very short time. How did this occur and what exactly inspires and motivates you? I worked and experimented a lot with Photoshop. Because I need images and photos to work with I began to take my own photographs. Finally, I wanted more people to know how I edited par- ticular images, what course of action I took and so on. I then decided to pass on my knowledge. To start with I only taught privately, then I thought to myself that I could potentially also teach com- mercially. “I was in the military for 10 years” Because of my many years in the mili- tary as an instructor I didn’t find it dif- ficult from the outset to teach and train other people; I didn’t have any reservations. How would you describe your incomparable “Calvinize look”? I don’t want to say that my look is totally unique nor compare it to others. Calvinize is simply the approach, I do tackle things with brute force, relatively unspectacularly. I’m no technical expert but I do work with a lot of emotion. I always try to instil personality into my images, this is very important to me. I would personally rather describe my image style as illustra- tive, artificial, picturesque with extreme contrasts. You don’t just create and photograph by yourself but you also gladly pass on your knowledge and tips in seminars and workshops. Do you find it easy to speak in front of a large audience? And how do you prepare for large presen- tations? When I’m on stage I’m generally happy to talk about what I like to do regardless of whether I am talking to 20 or 20,000 people. In private I am rather more reserved and shy because I find it very difficult to approach people. I prepare quite well for my presentations, I practice in front of the mirror and make a plan, think about jokes and visualisa- tions which all uses up a lot of energy. “I love to change things in way which wouldn’t be not possible live.” ➤ Calvin Hollywood – als ich den Namen zu ersten Mal hör- te, musste ich schon ein wenig grinsen. Wer heißt denn so? Kennt man den? Was macht der denn? Nach ein wenig Internet-Recherche war klar, Calvin Hollywood ist kein Name über den man lachen sollte, im Gegenteil, der nette Kerl aus der Nähe von Heidelberg hat’s ganz schön drauf! Seit bereits über 4 Jahren ist er bekannt in der Fotografie- und Photoshop Branche. Wir haben Calvin direkt auf unsere SAE Alumni Convention VII eingeladen und ihm auch gleich noch ein paar Fragen ge- stellt. Du bist in sehr kurzer Zeit zu einem der gefragtesten Photoshop Referen- ten in Deutschland und den angren- zenden Ländern geworden, wie ist es dazu gekommen und was genau hat dich inspiriert und motiviert? Ich habe viel mit dem Programm Pho- toshop gearbeitet und experimentiert. Da ich Bilder bzw. Fotos brauchte, die ich bearbeiten kann, habe ich angefan- gen selber zu fotografieren. Schließlich wollten immer mehr Menschen wissen, wie ich bestimmte Bilder bearbeitet ha- be, wie ich vorgegangen bin usw. Ich habe mich dann dazu entschlossen, mein Wissen weiterzugeben, anfangs habe ich es einfach nur privat erklärt, dann dachte ich mir, dass ich das eventuell auch kom- merziell machen könnte. „Ich war 10 Jahre beim Militär“ Durch meine langjährige Militärzeit als Ausbilder fiel es mir von Anfang an nicht schwer andere zu unterrichten und zu schulen, ich hatte also keinerlei Berührungsängste. Wie beschreibst du deinen unvergleichlichen „Calvinize- Look“? Ich will nicht sagen, dass mein Look total einzigartig ist, oder nicht vergleichbar mit anderen. Calvinize ist einfach die He- rangehensweise. Ich gehe vieles sehr brachial an, relativ un- spektakulär, ich bin kein Technik-Experte ich arbeite viel mit Gefühl. Ich versuche immer Persönlichkeit in meine Bilder zu bekommen, das ist mir sehr wichtig. Meinen Bild-Stil selbst würde ich eher als illustrativ, künstlich, malerisch beschreiben mit starken Kontrasten. Du gestaltest und fotografierst ja nicht nur im stillen Käm- merchen, sondern gibst dein Wissen und deine Tricks auch gerne in Seminaren und Workshops weiter. Fällt es dir leicht, vor großem Publikum zu sprechen? Und wie berei­ test du dich auf einen großen Vortrag vor? Auf einer Bühne kann ich im Grunde immer gut über das re- den was ich gern mache, egal ob 20 oder 20.000 Menschen. Privat bin ich dann doch eher zurückhaltend und schüchtern da fällt es mir total schwer auf Leute zuzugehen.
