Rod Jones gründete 1995 in Australien mit Kollegen ein einzelnes College, das nun zu einem der global führenden Bildungsanbieter mit über 50 Colleges und Kampussen mit mehr als 55.000 Studenten weltweit herangewachsen ist. Als Navitas Anfang dieses Jahres SAE Institute kaufte, wurde die Organisation noch größer. Wir sprachen mit Rod Jones, um mehr über Navitas und seine Vision für SAE Institute und Qantm College zu erfahren. Navitas, damals bekannt als IBT Education, wurde 1994 ge- gründet, als Rod Jones und Peter Larsen mit der Edith Cowan University in Perth einen Vertrag zur Eröffnung des Perth Ins- titute of Business and Technology (PIBT) unterzeichneten. Vor PIBT hatte Rod als Bildungsbeauftragter für die westaustrali- sche Regierung gearbeitet, hauptsächlich im Bereich der inter- nationalen Bildung. Innerhalb kurzer Zeit verbreitete sich das PIBT-Konzept in Australien und dann über See in Sri Lanka, Afrika, UK, Kanada, Singapur sowie kürzlich auch in den USA. In dieser Zeit begann Navitas, unter Rods Leitung, auch Englischkurse, Belegschaftstrainings und berufliche Fortbil- dungen sowie die Anwerbung von Studenten anzubieten. Navi- tas schaffte es 2004 an die australische Börse und ist nun als eine der Top 200 Firmen Australiens gelistet. Wie kamst Du mit dem Thema Bildung in Berührung? Es war nicht geplant. Im Leben triffst du manche Entscheidun- gen ohne wirklich zu wissen, wohin du dich bewegst und wo Du landest. Ich arbeitete zunächst in der Verwaltung der Uni- versity of Western Australia und machte dann bei der Staatsre- gierung als Verantwortlicher für Universitätszulassungen und Abschlussprüfungen für Highschools weiter. Nach einer Weile wurde ich vom westaustralischen Minister für Bildung in die internationale Bildungsinitiative versetzt, um Universitäten und Kollegen zu helfen internationale Studenten zu rekrutie- ren. Ich arbeitete für einige Zeit in dieser und ähnlichen Rol- len, bevor ich schließlich mein eigenes Business startete. Warum hast Du Dich zur Eröffnung des PIBT entschlos- sen? Peter und ich hatten für viele Jahre in der internationalen Bil- dung gearbeitet, und wir machten uns Sorgen um die vielen internationalen Studenten, deren Erfolg nach ihrer Ankunft an Universität oder College ausblieb. Wir realisierten schnell, dass es ein ziemlicher Schock ist, wenn man zum Studieren in ein neues Land mit für gewöhnlich neuer Sprache, neuer Kul- tur, anderen Lehrmethoden und fehlender Unterstützung durch die Familie kommt. Und all diese Faktoren machten es den Studenten ziemlich schwer erfolgreich zu sein. ➤ Rod Jones and colleagues founded a single college in Aus- tralia in 1995 which has now grown into a leading global education provider with more than fifty colleges and campuses around the world teaching to more than 55,000 students. When Navitas acquired SAE earlier this year the organisation got even bigger. We talk to Rod Jones to hear more about Navitas and his vision for SAE Institute and Qantm College. Navitas, then known as IBT Education, was founded in 1994 when Rod Jones and Peter Larsen signed an agreement to es- tablish the Perth Institute of Business and Technology (PIBT) with Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia. Before PIBT, Rod had worked for the Western Australian government across a number of education roles, predominantly in international education. Within a short period of time the PIBT concept was expanded across Australia and then overseas to Sri Lanka, Af- rica, the UK, Canada, Singapore and more recently the US. Along the way Navitas, led by Rod, also expanded in to Eng- lish language training, workforce and professional develop- ment and student recruitment. Navitas listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2004 and is now one of the top 200 listed companies in Australia. How did you get involved in Education? It wasn’t planned, in life you end up making some decisions without really knowing where you are going and where you will end up. I started working at the University of Western Australia in administration and then moved to a State Govern- ment body dealing with university admissions and final exams for high school students. After a while I was seconded to an international education initiative by the Western Australian Minister for Education to help universities and colleges recruit international students. I worked in that role, and similar roles, for some time before eventually branching out on my own. Why did you decide to open PIBT? Peter and I had worked in international education for many years and we were concerned by just how many international students failed to thrive at their university or college once they had arrived. We soon realised that coming to a new country to study is quite a shock, usually a new language, a new culture, a different way of studying, no family support, and all of these factors made it quite hard for students to succeed. We talked about it quite a bit and thought that if we could find a way to provide more support to international students in their first year then they may have a better chance to get used to their new country and then go on to do well with their studies ➤ He is the founder and CEO of Navitas and has been the driving force behind Navitas’ growth.
