Legendary filmmaker Garrett Brown visited SAE Insti- tute’s stand this year at the SMPTE Exhibition where he dis- cussed the ongoing use of his Steadicam in SAE’s education delivery. Garrett invented the Steadicam prior to 1976 and was operating his Oscar-winning camera rig on such famous scenes as Rocky running up the Philadelphia Art Mu- seum stairs in the first “Rocky” movie (directed by John Avildsen), and fol- lowing little Danny on his pedal trike around the halls of the Overlook Ho- tel in Stanley Kubrik’s “The Shining”. Garrett has helped create some of the most memorable images in screen history and showed off the newest in- carnation of his Steadicam whilst at the SAE Institute booth at this year’s event. Garrett, and Steadicam vet- eran Jerry Holway demonstrated the Steadicam Tango alongside SAE staff and students including Byron Bay Senior Film Lecturer, Russell Burton, Senior Film Lecturers from Sydney, David Crowe and Brad Crawford, and SAE ambassador scholarship student Jordan-Rhys Jeans. ■ Jessie George, National Communica- tions & PR Officer, SAE / Qantm Australia EVENTS & ACTIVITIES 129
