Short of attending the NAB conference held every year in Las Vegas, the SMPTE event is the preeminent conver- gence point of all the best toys and new technologies on the market, or about to come on the market. SAE Institute has had a stand at this important event for a number of years, predominantly to increase awareness to the industry (to whom we supply graduate students), but also to show industry some of our achievements in the arena. This year Sydney’s Senior Film Lecturer David Crowe presented a con- ference paper on a newly developed Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) course curriculum for higher education. This S3D course is on the horizon for broader implementation but is currently seen as a specialised step in the right direction for film students wanting to learn concepts in the burgeoning field of S3D. The sheer number of S3D films being produced at the moment is quite staggering and despite varying opinions of the form’s perceived longevity, it is seen as important that any S3D work created by new filmmakers is done correctly. It is clear that there are more than a few S3D films on the market that have not been received well publicly (in terms of the success of their stereoscopic use and effect), so trying to get these stereoscopic Das SMPTE-Event ist mit all den super Spielereien und neuen Technologien, die auf dem Markt sind oder bald sein werden eine hervorragende Ergänzung zum Besuch der alljährlichen NAB Conference in Las Vegas. Dieser S3D-Kurs könnte bald weitere Verbreitung finden, wird aber momentan noch als spezieller Schritt für Filmstudenten, die das Prinzip des boomenden S3D-Bereichs erlernen wollen, gesehen. Die Gesamtzahl im Moment produzierter S3D-Filme ist gigantisch. Und gegenüber der variierenden Meinungen zur Langlebigkeit dieser Machart wird es als wichtig angesehen, dass jede von neuen Filmemachern kreierte S3D-Arbeit korrekt ausgeführt wird.
