SAE Magazin 2/2011

Mag. Paul Steiner, M.A., B.A. (Hons.) studied at the WU Vienna, at the Melbourne Business School in Australia, at the Donau University Krems and at the SAE Technology Institute Vienna. He is the author of “Sensory Branding” and “Sound Branding”. “All five sensory channels and their reciprocal effects must be consciously steered in a brand-compliant way.” If we are addressed using all five senses, brand perception and integration of the brand into memory both occur faster. With multi-sensory directed brands, the intensity of perception and the quality of the experience is much stronger than with brands that communicate to their customers using only one or two senses. This neuronal amplification mechanism is called multi- sensory enhancement. Multi-sensory brand design and the resulting multi-sensory brand communication (provid- ing properly implemented) al- low for a unique perception of and a permanent preference for a company’s products or services. Multi sensory brand communication offers promising opportunities to attach consumers to a brand on a long-term basis with all senses, a greater willingness to pay and constant demand. Due to increasing pressure to differentiate, companies will in the future focus more attention on multi-sensory brand communication as people perceive their surroundings with all senses and therefore base their decisions on their multi- sensory perceptions. The following applies to marketing and brand success in the 21st century: all five sensory channels and their reciprocal effects must be consciously steered in a brand- compliant way. It is only then that goods and services offered by a company will be perceived as unique and that they will be preferred - even at higher prices. The current reference book “Sensory Branding – Grundlagen multisenusaler Markenführung” (Sensory Branding – Basic Principles of multi-sensory Brand Management”) by Paul Steiner is highly recommended to anyone interested in this exciting topic.
