Listening Formats Auro-3D’s different listening formats provide: • Backwards 5.1 ITU standard compatibility • Value – smallest “3D sound” system • Lowest number of channels for “Aurophonic” playback • Easy set up – simple extension of 5.1 surround configuration • Most cost-effective ITU 5.1-compatible 3D speaker layout (10 channels) • Natural step up from 5.1 surround sound systems • Easy installation (above corner speakers of a 5.1 setup) • Balance between front & rear, left & right, lower & upper channels • Compatibility with 22.2 NHK speaker layouts • A solution to the surround front-back separation issue (making 7.1 redundant) • A bigger sweet spot Auro-3D engine The Auro-3D engine is built around two core technologies: • Auro-3D’s Octopus codec • The Auro-Matic upmixing algorithm Octopus codec The main features of the patented Auro-3D Octopus codec are: • encoding of multichannel audio into a PCM stream with fewer channels (e.g. 9.1 into 5.1 or even 2.0) that can be played back by current systems without the need for a decoder. However, when a decoder is used, the extra channels can be retrieved with their original audio quality. • decoding of the original multichannel audio with 100% channel separation • virtually lossless compression at ratios greater than “true” lossless codecs (at least 2x, with inaudible distortion levels below -85dB) using no perceptual coding techniques • the highest backward and forward compatibility with existing playback and distribution formats. Auro-Matic upmixing algorithm Auro-3D’s technologies mesh with the expectation that enhanced realism will dominate the entertainment landscape of the future.
