Lennart Damann
Owner of High Tide Tonstudio

Lennart Damann is the owner of High Tide Studios near Cologne (Germany). In his younger years he played in lots of bands and got his fingers on his first recording gear when he was 14. He later took over his schools recording studio and recorded school bands and events.
He got his Degree in Audio Engineering from SAE Institute in 2012 and in 2011 he got the chance to take over part of the well known Coconut Studios (Weather Girls, Haddaway, Wolfgang Petry...) to start his own Recording Studio "High Tide Tonstudio" with one of his best friends.
2013 the studio buildings got sold and High Tide opened up a brand new facility in the old rooms of "Rüssmann Studio" which are known for the work with Brings, BAP, Höhner, Banaroo, Böhse Onkelz...
The new High Tide Studio was planned by professional Acoustic Engineers (MB Akustik) but was entirely built by Lennart Damann, Jeff Kater and Dominik Hartmann (The High Tide Team at that time) themselves.
Since then many national and international bands and stars made their way to High Tide. Including David Guetta, Ryan Leslie, Höhner, Mike Singer, Extrabreit. Some companies High Tide worked for are Samsung, LG, Galaxy Instruments, Fender, UEFA, Universal...
High Tide and its partner Florian Richter installed a 3D Spatial SoundWave System by Fraunhofer IDMT and is a leading Studio for 3D Sound.

Luca Lange
Graphic Designer / Lecturer / Coach at Lange Design

Hi, my name is Luca, I don't live on the second floor but I believe in better education for today's generation.

I work as a freelance multi-disciplinary graphic designer, specialized in branding, brand identity and strategy. I gained experience by working with 20th Century Fox, Studio Canal, start-ups and small to medium sized businesses.

My passion however is to teach and to learn by teaching. I strive to my best ability, to give others value from what I know and by doing so I often teach myself. Before I decided to teach I went took various paths from being a military officer to working in a press agency, trying to ultimately find the profession suiting me. One thing stood out to me along the way of being taught in German and US American secondary schools, the military or even tertiary schools. Curriculums that are not designed to fit today's student generation.

Within the frame of my Bachelor Thesis I started to researched students needs and teachers perspectives to find the perfect match and to sum it up in a didactically profound system. To this day and for however long I am going to teach others, I will keep tweaking and adding details from everyday experiences to ensure an up-to-date satisfying system.

The Future of Education – Building a Curriculum for the Digital Native

Blended Learning, Hands On and Building Relationships

How do we, as teachers, coaches, tutors or lecturers assure highly focused and motivated students?
How do the students activate long-term memory?
What does the curriculum need to look like for digital natives?
And what makes a great teacher?

A lot of questions, a lot of opinions. Teaching and especially the right way of teaching can be a very touchy subject.
In my talk I will give you answers from my point of view and show you what I found to be an effective, student-centered method of teaching classes in a media-centered institution.

In long-term research, interviews with international teachers and professionals and practical tests I worked on finding the best way to meet every parties needs in terms of teaching, curriculum and classroom structure. I am going to talk about Blended Learning, building sustainable relationships between teacher and students, practical classroom units, student-centered curriculum choices, didactic fundamentals, the importance of video units and how to design a curriculum for your own teaching scenarios.

The talk is targeted at teachers, tutors, coaches, lecturers, supervisors and everyone who is eager to change education to the better. Students are also more than welcome to join us and share their perspective, as well as opinion towards the presented method. For Beginners, Advanced and Experts.

Together we want to discuss the future classroom and even the future university that is designed to serve the students.

Georg Tiefenbach is the academic coordinator and programme leader of the Master of Professional Practice in Cologne. His feature films for cinema and television are screened and awarded at many festivals like Berlin, Cannes, Busan and Venice. He’s producing and publishing film music with his own label TFM world-wide. Georg’s scientific book „Drama und Regie“ („Writing and Directing“) has become core literature in research and teaching.

Dominik U. Kammerer is a passionate listener and producer of beats and vocal content and very intrigued by the hip hop culture. While being head of audio department at SAE Institute Stuttgart, he is currently participating in the Master's programme at campus Cologne surveying asthetics and perception of lo-fi artifacts and its implementation in modern arts and culture, thus participating in the panel discussion.

Michael Riegert, a master student at the SAE Cologne, started his professional career as a systems-designer in 2016 after graduating with his Bachelor Degree in Audio Engineering from the SAE Institute in Munich.

Though, I don’t create records, movies or content for different media formats, I feel deeply connected to the creative industry. Working in a professional environment that requires a lot of different skillsets, I am in a unique position of designing various kinds of high performing audio, video and multimedia systems. Those systems combined form the technical basis for art and performance to function, in big theatre or concert hall environments - because ideas should not be limited by technology.

As an enthusiast for the highly discussed Immersive Audio my masters work focuses on the transport of emotions, in context by the gained experience of understanding and utilizing 3D Sound within and across the media industry.

After finishing my Game Art studies at SAE Köln in 2017 I started my Master of Science Professional Practice at SAE Köln instant. Now, almost four years after starting my studies, I have a broad knowledge in the field of Virtual Reality and its technical implementation. In my continuing studies, I explore the limited freedom of movement by using Virtual Reality applications and the possibilities to make this restriction obsolete.

More than a read threat - Deep structure in cultural documentary films

The documentary film is usually regarded as a vehicle for conveying reality. But how can we mediate this reality without remaining merely factual? As a cultural journalist and documentary filmmaker, I have been working for more than ten years with the conviction that meaning can and must be conveyed in a sensual way. Sense and sensuality are not just linguistically related to each other. These dimensions can also be closely linked in film, for example through the so-called cinematic depth structure. Using the example of an episode of an eight-part documentary film series on international art museums that will soon be broadcast on public television, I would like to show how a story can be narrated subcutaneously on several filmic levels. How cognitive understanding is made possible through emotional understanding. How even documentary scenes can be provoked, how content can be emotionally deepened and expanded on a subcutaneous level through moods, music, verbal or visual wit.

How to finish, release and survive your first game

pixelBOT EXTREME! began in early 2014 and took around four years of (part-time) development to finally see the light of the day.
My talk will handle two topics:
How to manage finishing and releasing your first own indie game without any budget and only one and a half people AND
How to make most out of limited content through level design.

Together we will go through our key learnings and Do’s and Don’ts on how to survive and achieve the realization of your dream project.
Additionally we’ll dive a bit deeper into Level Design, investigating various design approaches and techniques to achieve a fun, innovative and unique user experience. Following that we’ll also examine what “Content is king” can really mean for your content-light project.

The Future Of Digital Storytelling - Tools, Pipelines And Concepts

Games like Lifeline, City of Love or The Wayne Investigation have a lot in common. They all are modern interpretation of a classic genre: The Text Adventure. They all are driven solely by their narrative and in the case of digital assistants the complete game design and experience depends just on the story itself.
Creating an exciting game experiences for these platforms is especially challenging. Instead of using the full palette of graphics, text and audio to interact with the game, these formats limit themselves to only one dimension - either text or voice. The developer needs a better understanding of the interplay between user interface, user experience and game design to achieve the same degree of immersion.
During the lecture I will talk about the challenges in designing a story driven game for Alexa & Co that delivers a narration that reacts to the player’s input in a satisfying way while keeping the story consistent. Also I will take a foray into how to monetize a story driven game with Free-to-Play mechanics: From the art of creating meaningful choices, the user is willing to pay for, to the creation of more content and a premium story experience.

Pitching in the Games Industry - Do's and Don'ts to leave a memorable mark and get a Deal

To get a deal for a funding or a publishing contract in the games industry is often a walk on the edge. During the stages of preparation, presentation and negotiation there are quite a few potential obstacles to overcome, which are not necessarily obvious.

This talk is intended to provide some insight and best practices for the pitching process itself, but it even more takes care of the surrounding factors in detail. Expectation management, projected presence and priming for the unexpected are key elements of a successful pitch. And especially during the tension of the preparation phase, these are often underestimated and therefore prioritized lower in favor of content, which is only half the foundation to get a "go!"

How AI will change music in VR and video games

Is it possible for machines to compose interesting music? Can we leverage intelligent machines to help people with no musical skills to create music? What’s the best use of machines in music creation? What's the impact of music on interactive content? These are some of the questions we’ll explore in this session, which focuses on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for generating music for Virtual Reality (VR) and video games.

At the beginning of the talk, I’ll give a brief presentation about video game music and the impact of AI on music creation. I’ll provide a short overview of what has been done in this field to date, and analyse what are the weaknesses and strengths of using AI for generating music. The core of the presentation will be about how AI can enhance people’s musical creation abilities, regardless of their musical skills. I'll introduce the concept of Deep Adaptive Music and show the results of research we conducted at Melodrive about the impact of music on engagement in VR. Towards the end of the presentation, I’ll introduce Melodrive - an AI music system that is able to create music in realtime for interactive content like video games and VR experiences from scratch.

Jamahook - The Sound Playground

How new technologies and creativity go hand in hand and open up new opportunities for professional music producers and musicians as well as amateurs and newbies.

Jamahook has created a worldwide unique algorithm that brings together sounds that match. For content creators it is a new source for selling creations and productions and at the same time it is a sound networking platform that interactively brings together music producers, musicians and music lovers only through the sound of their music.

The core technology of Jamahook called Sound Match has the ability to recognize any sound and analyze its attributes (BPM, key/harmony, mood/timbre and rhythmic pattern). Then it suggests matches in form of loops, beats, tracks or accapellas that go well with your reference track.

Jamahook does not only save essential time in the music production process - more over it gets the best out of your content and is a new source for music producers and sound designers to make money, find collaborators and raise the fun factor in creating music.
